Brief Profile
Dr. Alok Kumar Mishra is a Professor at the School of Economics, University of Hyderabad, an Institution of Eminence. He also serves as the Associate Director of the Office for International Affairs and the Study in India Programme at the University. He has previously held the position of Director for several key initiatives, including the Land, Housing, Transport, and Urban Economics Programme under the HUDCO Chair.
Dr. Mishra brings a unique blend of academic rigour and industry experience to his work. Before joining academia full-time, he held several prestigious positions in the financial services sector — as Assistant Vice President at the Bank of New York Mellon, Manager of Quantitative Finance in the Financial Strategic Division at Shinsei Bank, Tokyo, Manager of Investment Research at Evalueserve.com Private Limited, and Research Officer at the National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM), Pune.
An accomplished scholar, Dr. Mishra was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Fellowship Award at the South Asia Institute (SAI), Heidelberg University, Germany in 2014, and received the Chancellor's Award in 2016 for his outstanding contributions to teaching and research at the University of Hyderabad. He was also conferred the Young Economist Award (YEA) 2023 by the Odisha Economic Association, India, and represented India in the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility Training Programme 2023 at Freie Universität, Berlin, Germany.
He has published more than 60 peer-reviewed research papers in reputable national and international journals and is the author of 5 books. His most recent work, "Smart Cities and the Poor: Towards an Agenda for Inclusive Urbanisation in India" (Routledge, Taylor & Francis, UK, 2023), focuses on fostering inclusive, equitable, and sustainable urban development, aligned with the UN SDGs, the New Urban Agenda of Habitat III, and India's urban policy missions.
Dr. Mishra has supervised eleven Ph.D. candidates (all awarded), twenty-five M.Phil. scholars, and over fifty Master's dissertations. He holds an M.A. in Economics, an M.Phil. in Monetary Economics, and a Ph.D. in Financial Economics, all from the University of Hyderabad.
